Provision of Services for Marine Vessel Plume Sniffing and Fuel Sulphur Content Measurement in Hong Kong Waters using Unmanned Aviation Vehicle with Sensor Sniffing System

Abstract

Ocean-going vessels (shortened by OGV) are now identified as a major source of sulfur dioxide in coastal cities in China, like Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Governments have carried out a series of sulfur emission control laws and fuel sulfur content (shortened by FSC) is tested to meet the sulfur emission reduction requirements. It's very costly and time-consuming to get aboard checking the fuel for law enforcement officials. So it's a necessity to develop new tech to test FSC with high efficiency and low cost.

Our team has developed a micro-sensor sniffing system to calculate FSC by measuring the concentration of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide. Our former study has proved its practical application value and extensional research is still in process.
